Tasmania JackJumpers 22/23 Youth Indigenous Jersey

Artist: Auntie Judith-Rose Thomas

Is a direct descendant of Manalargenna – from the Cape Portland (also known as Ben Lomond) tribe

She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts with honours, and a Master of Fine Arts and Design from the University of Tasmania.

She was the first Tasmanian Aboriginal artist whose work has been purchased under the Tasmanian Government’s Art for Public Building Scheme, and has work all around the world in private collections, in the National Museum in Canberra, and has exhibited in Parliament House in Hobart.

Auntie Judith-Rose wasn’t given the opportunity to be taught art as a child – not learning folk art until she was 49 years old. Hence, after she finished university she has spent the last 22 years giving back to children. For example, every time she paints a mural she won’t do one unless children are involved in the process.

Albert Namatj was her inspiration to be an artist. She currently lives in Launceston. Auntie Judith-Rose is a trowoolyway woman from the lettermariner tribe

Jersey Design:

Using Tasmanian aboriginal petroglyphs, sacred sites to Tasmanian aboriginal people, to record and symbolise historical information about aboriginal people of Tasmania.

The spear will symbolise the fighting spirit. Tasmanian aboriginal people have a fighting spirit, and this is shared by the JackJumpers basketball team. The design will depict fighting spirit and determination.
